What to Expect with Wheelchair Van Maintenance

All Things Possible is passionate about making a difference in our community by gifting families in need of wheelchair accessible vans. We love seeing lives changed for the better and seeing the faces of our van recipients light up with joy when we present them with a new-to-them wheelchair van. The vans we gift are already converted for wheelchair accessibility and are under 10 years old with under 100,000 miles.

Our applicants go through a vetting process to ensure that they not only truly need financial assistance acquiring a van, but also that they can afford the upkeep and maintenance of the van after theyโ€™ve received it. We always aim to be transparent with potential van recipients, as well as with those donating to our cause, and wheelchair van maintenance is one thing we get a lot of inquiries about.

All Things Possible doesnโ€™t pay for or assist with ongoing maintenance or repairs of the vans we gift. We do have them thoroughly examined by trustworthy mechanics before we present them to the families who need them. The vans are in โ€œas isโ€ condition like any other used vehicle from a dealership. We make no additional warranties or guarantees above whatever the dealership gives.ย

Maintaining a Wheelchair Van

Ensuring the safety and security of wheelchair users is of paramount importance, especially when it comes to wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Regular maintenance of wheelchair vans is crucial to guarantee a smooth and secure transportation experience for individuals with mobility challenges.

Aside from normal vehicle maintenance, like oil changes, tire rotations, and brake replacements, wheelchair vans have additional components that require upkeep. The ramp and lift systems have electrical and mechanical components that need to be examined regularly to ensure they are in proper working order. Wheelchair restraint systems also need inspections to make sure they are functioning properly.

Maintaining a wheelchair van is important for the safety and security of wheelchair users and their families. Getting regular inspections from certified wheelchair van specialists and following manufacturer recommendations can help prevent accidents and provide safe transportation for individuals with mobility challenges. By prioritizing safety measures and staying proactive in maintenance efforts, caregivers and wheelchair users alike can enjoy peace of mind during their travels.

The reason upkeep is even more important to wheelchair van users is that if a wheelchair van breaks down on the road, a standard towing company wonโ€™t come and help. They are not able to transport the wheelchair or the disabled user. There are only a small number of specialty transport companies who can accommodate a wheelchair van user who is stranded on the road. The dealership we purchase from can supply a list of those in our area. They can also sell users an extended warranty plan for the vehicles we gift.

The local Charlotte wheelchair van dealership that we partner with is Ilderton Conversions. They have been our trusted resource for all aspects of the wheelchair van business since 2015. A family-owned company, they have wheelchair van specific dealerships in High Point, Charlotte, and Asheville, NC as well as Charleston, SC. While we canโ€™t recommend one specific company to those who need repairs or maintenance on wheelchair vans, our experience is that our friends at Ilderton are thoughtful, caring, and talented individuals who know this industry inside and out.
